When Citroën unveiled the DS in 1955, it looked as though it had arrived from another world. Flaminio Bertoni’s styling was unlike almost anything else on the road, while the engineering underneath was just as unconventional. Hydropneumatic suspension, self-levelling ride height, power assistance and disc brakes were all part of a package that made the DS feel radically different from its contemporaries.

And even today, it still does.

This 1974 DS20 has undergone a complete nut-and-bolt restoration, carried out with obvious knowledge, dedication and attention to detail. The quality of the work can be seen throughout the entire car. This is not simply a DS that was made attractive on the outside. The details, finish and mechanical aspects were all taken seriously.

Someone clearly knew exactly what they were doing. The colour combination is another highlight. Gris Palladium with Noir detailing works beautifully with the Rouge velour interior. It is sophisticated, unmistakably French and just unusual enough to give the car real presence. The red velour also gives the cabin a warmth that suits the DS perfectly.

And then there is the comfort. A DS with cloth upholstery may well be one of the most comfortable ways to enjoy a classic car. Settle into the soft seats, let the hydropneumatic suspension do its work and even poor roads suddenly seem much less dramatic. This example also comes with a large folding roof, adding another dimension entirely.

Roof open, comfortable seats and the DS simply gliding along. That is a pretty good way to travel. This DS20 presents beautifully and stands out because of the details. The restoration, the interior, the colour scheme and the overall finish all work together as they should. Is the DS the most beautiful car of all time? That is for you to decide. But this example certainly makes a convincing case.
