The Citroën 2CV is probably one of the most iconic and important cars in all automotive history, especially when speaking about French cars. Not only did the car together with the German VW Beetle and Italian Fiat 500 allow the labouring class to afford a car, after the second world war the 2CV it gave a hard pressed French economy a shove in the back and provided a lot of extra employment.
In 1957 this very distinctive 2CV ‘rib-top’ rolled of the production line, the original in other words. Just in that year over 100,000 were produced, most of them, as you can imagine, have gone to the eternal hunting grounds. This blue 2CV was spared that particular lot and was beautifully restored recently . Not as they did back in the 80’s and 90’s with lots of filler on a minimal budget, but as they are prone to do these days: back to bare metal before being expertly reassembled back to a pristine state.

What we have here is a wonderful Dolly (or less respectfully Dustbin on Wheels) in grand condition. The bodywork is as it should be including all the seams and alignment so typical for a 2CV. The paintwork is in peak condition with a nice but not overtly modern lustre. Dolly number 350167 was resprayed in a grey-blue colour. The expert would immediately spot the colour was not authentic as back then they only came in grey. The floor of this ‘rib-top’ is as good as the rest, having been fully restored.

Restoration of the interior was also seriously taken into account. Obviously the 2CV shows lots of coloured-coded metal as well as other parts being as good as new: the seats are now pristine having been restored to include their paintwork and upholstery. All switching gear, minimalistic dashboard with its speedometer placed to the left of the steering wheel are in peak condition. That speedometer, by the way, is as good as certain original with its faded gear selection optic and mileometer. We call that having a desirable amount of patina. Mechanically this 2CV has been really well put together and that is notable when driving. You would not expect sportive performance from the 12 hp 425cc engine, every mile however does leave you smiling. Not many classics handle like this Citroën.

In short: An early Citroën. 2CV, no remedial action required and heaps of character. What a feast!
