Alright, tell me! Gorgeous, special, but not for me? There are no other choices available when it comes to the RZ. Perhaps the contrasting opinions are even greater with its closed brother: the Alfa Romeo SZ. Before describing the car we have on offer, it is a good idea to expand a little on the Alfa Romeo RZ’s history. The Alfa Romeo RZ is the open-top variation of the Alfa Romeo SZ. The SZ is the production version of the “ES-30” concept car. ES standing for Experimental Sportscar- 3.0 litre. SZ stands for Sprint Zagato and RZ unsurprisingly for Roaster Zagato. Even though the world famous Studio Zagato logo is featured on the RZ, they were nor responsible for its design. The bodywork came from the Walter da Silva and Alberto Bertelli’s drawing board. Zagato only added a few small details and was responsible for assembling the SZ in first instance and later the RZ. The SZ and RZ are built on a shortened Alfa Romeo 75 base. The bodywork is completely made of synthetic material. Although superficially the RZ looks like a SZ with a hood, they are actually totally different cars. There were no less than 500 different parts in putting the RZ together in comparison to the SZ. Both cars were feted for their fantastic driving characteristics and stunning 3.0 V6 Busso engine. The transmission was also admired. Where the 75 3.0 was known for being troublesome when changing down, Alfa had corrected this foible after production of the 75 had ceased. The RZ profited from this improvement and shifts perfectly. Alfa was planning to produced 350 RZ’s in addition to 1,000 SZ’s. Eventually only 278 RZ’s were built.

This 1993 Alfa Romeo RZ was supplied from new by the Varese Alfa Romeo dealership branch in Italy. The 1993 built car was only registered for the first time in 1995. The car was bought by its one and only owner, a Dutchman. Every year an Alfa Romeo dealership has looked after this car and has therefore remained absolutely in peak condition! It is no surprise the Alfa Romeo RZ was only bought by devotees and this one is the summit of devotion. The documentation is 100% complete. When we say complete we even include the unused radio stickers, every receipt and piece of paper relating to its mileage and maintenance. The RZ made its way to the Netherlands in 1997 and has been owned by one and the same person since. The car was always garaged and only used in fine weather conditions, which has kept the mileage down to less than 27,000 km.

The bodywork looks great. The synthetic body parts align perfectly and look pristine. The perfectly fitting hood is also in a very good original condition. The undamaged wheels are authentic. The paintwork is original. The documentation even has Zagato confirmation this particular chassis number left the factory with this yellow finish.

Inside the black leather contrasts beautifully with the external yellow finish that also carries through internally. There are great looking white Veglia Borletti instruments that are in perfect working order. The interior leather trim is pristine. The internal condition only goes to confirm the actual low

mileage. The seat side bolsters are totally undamaged and the carpets look untrodden. The dashboard leather trim also looks pristine.

Mechanically this Alfa Romeo RZ is in excellent health having been perfectly maintained. The 3.0 V6 Busso engine delivers 210 Hp and 235 Nm, carrying the RZ form 0 to 100 km/hr in 7.5 sec, through to a top speed of 230km/hr. The engine is supple enough to be driven in a relaxed fashion or sportively. The manual 5-speed transmission shifts with ease and without any play whatsoever. The characteristics on the road of this Alfa Romeo RZ is of a high standard, in part thanks to the Koni shocks that directly come out of the Alfa Romeo 75 IMSA racer. These 5cm hydraulically adjustable shocks allow you to move over road humps or drive into a parking garage. The RZ’s trans-axial placed gearbox gives the Alfa Romeo RZ a 54/46 weight distribution providing pleasant and predicable roadholding. This Alfa Romeo RZ is perfectly documented. It has a Zagato certificate, complete car wallet and a number of technical manuals. In addition to the latter the complete service history is supported by numerous invoices and log books.

Furthermore the maintenance history is fully supported with a large amount of invoices and logbook entries. This mountain of paperwork also underwrites the low mileage and exceptional condition of the Alfa Romeo RZ. This is nothing less than a perfectly assembled one owner Alfa Romeo RZ with an impeccable provenance. A unique vehicle for the serious Alfa Romeo collector.
