We have a unique 1974 Citroën SM. It comes in lovely “Beige Tholonet Metalisé” matched with a brown interior trim. The car has fuel injection and a manual 5-speed transmission. It also has only managed to clock up an incredibly low 27,429 miles. This SM was supplied in California, the USA when new.
Rumour has it no one other than Briggs Cunningham ordered the car. It is said he drove the for some 8,000 miles before selling it to the Cunningham Museum. There it resided until the museum’s closure in 1988. The second private owner also added 8,000 miles, totalling just over 16,000 miles in all. The third and last owner took the mileage of the SM up to its current mileage.
During its time at the Cunningham museum the headlights were changed to European spec versions. All parts required were directly ordered from Citroën in France. The last owner bought the car off one of the American Citroën SM specialists, SM World (also know for its twin-turbo, world record Citroën SM). SMWorld also added a few upgrades. The adaptive headlights were changed from hydraulic to actuator steered units because the hydraulic hoses tendency to leak in time. The air conditioning compressor was upgraded, the water temperature sensor recalibrated and finally the ignition was replaced with an updated version with double contact points.
Besides the mainly invisible upgrades, the car is otherwise fully original. The bodywork, the cabin, engine bay and paintwork are all exactly as they were when the car left the factory.
The bodywork has kept its original panelwork and chrome brightwork, both in good condition and with neat joins. Other than a few slight signs of use the fully original paintwork is in good condition.
The interior has light brown carpets and dark brown leather upholstery. The interior trim has been correctly treated and is in excellent condition. Gauges and controls are in very good condition. The top of the black dashboard is still very nice. That this car has mainly been kept inside is clearly obvious, as it would otherwise be nigh on impossible to find this fine level of condition. The steering wheel with its single spoke and elegant thin gear stick are also both fully original, contributing is no small way to the SM’s unique appearance.
The only 140 kg 2.7 litre V6 engine is a Maserati piece of artistic engineering. The engine develops 178 Ps and thanks to the SM’s aerodynamic shape and low Cw is capable of reaching a top speed of 228 km/hr. The SM has a mid-engine configuration driving the front wheels situated behind the front axle. Everything in the engine bay is original. The engine runs well and the manual transmission works accurately. The hydro-pneumatic suspension delivers unrivalled roadholding.
The car comes with a document file. There is a handwritten account, various invoices and magazine articles.
This is a unique, low mileage Citroën SM in very original condition.
