Dies ist die 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. And to be fair, it took us a few seconds as well to realize that we were actually looking at the new 992.2. But once you look into what Porsche has changed beneath the bodywork, it quickly becomes clear that this is anything but a routine model update.

For decades, the Turbo S has been a remarkable phenomenon within the 911 family. It is the version that attempts to combine qualities that almost seem mutually exclusive. Performance that is more than serious enough for the racetrack, all-wheel drive that actually puts that power down effectively, and at the same time enough comfort to cover hundreds of miles without the slightest effort. With the roof down, in this case.

With this latest generation, Porsche has added something else: T-Hybrid technology. At the rear sits a 3.6-liter flat-six, supported by a hybrid system and two electrically driven turbochargers. Together, the system produces 711 horsepower and an impressive 800 Nm of torque. That makes this the most powerful production 911 Porsche has built to date.

And what makes it particularly interesting is that electrification here is not primarily about driving efficiently. It is about speed. The electric assistance allows the turbochargers to respond almost instantly and supports the powertrain precisely where a combustion engine would normally need a moment to build momentum. The result is a Turbo S that responds even more directly and delivers its enormous power with virtually no hesitation. In the closed version, 0 to 100 km/h takes just 2.5 seconds. Those are figures that only a few years ago belonged to full-blown hypercars.

But perhaps that is exactly why the appearance of this example has been so well judged. Vanadium Grey Metallic. No loud launch color and no specification that tries to tell everyone from a hundred yards away how much it cost. The gray emphasizes the wide Turbo body, the enormous air intakes, and the overall shape in a much more subtle way. Inside, Basalt Black leather gives the entire car a particularly mature and purposeful feel.

Until you get to the wheels. This Turbo S is fitted with Exclusive Manufaktur Design wheels featuring black carbon-fiber spokes. That detail alone gives away the fact that the configurator was not rushed through. Carbon has also been used generously elsewhere, which suits the technical character of this generation perfectly. Exactly the sort of material choice you would expect from a 911 that now produces well over 700 horsepower.

Practicality has fortunately not been forgotten. The car is equipped with a front-axle lift system, almost essential on a sports car this low whenever a parking garage, speed bump, or steep driveway decides to make your day a little more exciting than planned. And then there is the mileage. Fewer than 400 kilometers. Dealer mileage.

In other words, for all practical purposes, this is an almost new Turbo S Cabriolet. An example that has barely been broken in, while at the same time belonging to a generation that marks an important new chapter in the history of the Porsche 911.

And that is precisely what makes this car so interesting. Over the years, the 911 Turbo has become faster, wider, and more technologically advanced, but the basic concept has always remained recognizable. A flat-six mounted at the rear, an almost timeless silhouette, and performance figures that seem slightly absurd for a car you can also simply drive to the South of France.

With the 992.2 Turbo S, the technology changes dramatically, but the character does not. It is still unmistakably a 911. Still a Turbo. Still a Cabriolet. It just happens to have 711 horsepower, two electric turbochargers, all-wheel drive, an enormous amount of carbon fiber, and performance that means you may need to be careful not to make the South of France feel much closer than you remembered.

And all of that in Vanadium Grey Metallic. So yes, it is subtle, mostly when it is standing still.
