Say ‘Massimo Tamburini’ and almost every motorcycle enthusiast will see a model: the 916. This Italian supersport bike, which was presented in 1994, caused a huge shock wave through the entire motorcycle world, and has now achieved a status comparable to that of a Ferrari F40. Of course not in terms of price or exclusivity, but this is the motorcycle that hangs in poster form in an incredible number of boys’ rooms, this is the motorcycle that provides inspiration for many competing brands in the years that follow.

The 916 is replaced by the 996 at the end of 1998, which in turn has to make way for the 998 in 2002. The 998 is still largely the same in appearance, behind the beautiful fairing is a completely new V-twin, the Testastretta, which means ‘small head’. The design of the engine block is almost completely new and already good for 123 hp in standard trim.

However, the 998 you see here is not a ‘standard’ 998, it is the holy grail of the model, the 998R. The 998R is characterized by more power, which is achieved by increasing the bore by 4 mm and reducing the stroke by 4.7 mm. This achieves a power of 139 hp at 10,000 rpm. Special features such as the sand-cast crankcase also distinguish this Ducati from the normal versions. Meanwhile, the weight of the 998R has been reduced to 183 kilograms by using a lot of carbon fiber parts. The list of lightweight parts is endless, with the airbox, front and rear fender, chain guard, swing-arm cover and heel plates being just a few notable parts. The R stands on beautiful Marchesini wheels and of course the front and rear suspension and damping are provided by Ohlins.

As standard, a 998R is fitted with Termignoni exhaust silencers, which are already not bad, but with this R there is something special to be found under the original mono seat. The NCR Racing Team is an established name in motorsport, having raced in the Superbike championship for decades. There I drove with dampers from Sil Motor for a long time. Absolute top products and that was also the reason why a set from this manufacturer came under the 998R not long ago. This set was no longer for sale and Sil Motor produced a unique 60 mm set for this motorcycle for once. You understand: for many, this exhaust set alone is more than desirable.

The rest of this Ducati, number 063 of 700, is completely in concours condition. The 998R has driven only 10,500 kilometers and is dealer maintained. The certificate is present with the motorcycle and the original exhausts are also still with the motorcycle. The condition is exceptionally beautiful and everything about this motorcycle is so beautiful that parking in the living room is also possible. That is a shame, by the way, because you will miss the exceptional experience that driving provides.
