When, during the 1961 Paris Motor show, the sheet was lifted off the Facel II the whole world gasped. Not just the rich and famous but the masses also fell for Facel II’s good looks. Pure French grandeur propelled by an almighty American power plant. With some distance, this was the best cooperation between both countries since the mid ’40s in the last century. The Facel II remained an unattainable dream for many. It good looks as well as its price provided stiff competition for Rolls-Royce. Our car was acquired by a Spanish diplomat. He bought the Facel II directly from the factory in 1963 and kept hold of it until 2007. Whilst the length of time may be remarkable, the fact that he took the car with him to the States and

continued using it as his daily drive well into the 90s is even more special. To keep the car in good condition the car made the journey over the Atlantic on the Queen Mary on at least four occasions to be serviced at the Paris-based factory. After its service, the car was kept in a museum from which the well-known Facel specialist, Amicale Facel Holland, was able to purchase the car in 2007. Although the car was by no means in anything other than very good condition taking its mileage and use into consideration, it was decided to fully restore the car. Those in the know are all to aware that a solid base is half the work.

The restoration was a thorough affair. The car was stripped and taken back to bare metal. The body and chassis were then subjected to careful necessary repair. The car was then resprayed in its original finish. Quite rightly so as what is more fetching than “Bleu Facel Irisé”? Even more so when combined with beautiful blue leather upholstery. This is a first-class restoration that has been perfectly maintained since. With few miles added since its restoration, it should come as no surprise that this Facel’s condition remains in very good order. The panelwork is even throughout, the alignment correct, the paintwork superb, the Borrani wheels were sent back to Borrani in Italy for detailing and the chrome adornments are perfectly flush.

The blue leather and blue carpet interior were completely refitted. The work was carried out to an exacting standard and very much in keeping with the original detail. The wood effect dashboard was fully restored to excellent effect. A modern air-conditioning unit was added to aid travel in hot weather. Everything about this car’s interior, be it the dashboard, headlining or carpets, all have a well-cared-for look. All of the gauges and switching gear look stunning and, needless to say, are in the correct working order.

Mechanically this car is totally sound. There is a Chrysler 6.2 litre V8 that comes producing 355 Hp partially thanks to a single Four Barrel carburettor. The engine transfers its power through a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic gearbox, perfectly suited to Facel’s relaxed handling. Whilst undoubtedly a Grand Tourer, it is also a very fast car that showed the likes of Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin and even Porsche a clean pair of heels. This car also underwent a full mechanical rebuild as part of the restoration. Every gasket, hose, and coupling was replaced with top-quality new items. The car therefore handles and rides phenomenally good and is very powerful. The automatic shifts are delightfully supple and brakes and suspension are more than equal to their respective tasks.

The car has documentation relating to the restoration with a report, old pictures and copies of old paperwork.

This stunning and extremely rare Facel II is in the very best condition and presentation together with wonderful provenance.
