What a sight! When do you last see a Khamsin? Have you ever seen one? The Maserati Khamsin is the ultimate 70’s Grand Tourer; it was Maserati’s take on how to travel through Europe at speed. This example is probably the most perfect Khamsin specimen in the whole world. This 1977 Maserati only has 14,275 km on the clock and is pristine. Lets start with a brief history on how and why this model was developed. Bertone received its first commission to design a Maserati in 1972. A concept study of the Khamsin was shown at the 1972 Turin car show to the general public on Bertone’s stand. It had an enthusiastic reception and in March 1973 the production model was unveiled on the Maserati stand at the Paris car show. The Khamsin was presented as the successor to the Maserati Ghibli. At the same time as the Khamsin, Maserati also had the Bora in its array. The Bora was seen more as a sports car rather than a Grand tourer due to its mid-engine configuration behind the front seats. The Khamsin overcame this problem with its front-mid engine. To top it all the Khamsin was also a 2+2 and considering its size had a decent boot. Whilst the Khamsin had all the markings of success, the oil crisis put paid to its sales with eventually only 435 cars sold. In 2000 this Khamsin was perfectly restored. The car has a splendid Rosso Fuoco finish with Tan interior trim. One can readily appreciate the thoroughness of the work carried out. The bodywork is in wonderful shape. The perfect panelwork aligns superbly. The unblemished paintwork is perfect. The cabin is also in perfect condition. The “Tan” leather upholstery and matching carpets are pristine. Even though a particularly onerous job, the suede dashboard covering was also replaced rather than being substituted with leather. The suede dashboard covering typifies the Khamsin, but is often ignored in lesser restorations. All switches and instruments are in pristine condition and excellent working order. The Khamsin is a rare beast at the best of times, but you would be hard put to find a better example. Mechanically the car has also been thoroughly taken in hand. The engine, transmission, the differential, brakes and suspension and basically everything else has fully been overhauled. The effect is certainly noticeable when on the road. The 4.9litre AM 115 V8 engine produces 330 Hp at 5,500 revs and 482 Nm of torque at 4,000 revs. The engine has 4 twin Webers and is sited lovely and low in the chassis thanks to a dry-sump system. It also has a 5-speed ZF gearbox. The engine runs fabulously and always has more than ample torque available in its large bore and perfectly

tuned Webers. The transmission is so good that you get the sensation of having just left the Maserati dealership in 1977 in your brand new Khamsin. Strangely enough the car was not used much after the restoration, which has only help preserve it exceptional condition. Although it was not driven a lot, that certainly did not mean that regular maintenance was ignored. There are recent invoices detailing this and it has recently had four new tyres fitted to the correct factory specification.
