In 1953 presented its new 180, a four-door saloon with a straight 4-cylinder engine. Quickly thereafter six-cylinder engines appeared with a more capacious bodywork named the 220. The 220 (W180) has a longer engine bay and cabin, the 220S adds even more space for driver and passenger. A luxury saloon that became known as the Ponton, even though Mercedes never used that name.

The W120 (4-cylinder) and the W180 (six-cylinder) were amongst the first models to feature a patented crumple zone with a very stiff passenger space and an engine bay that was specifically intended to absorb accident energy. This made the Ponton one of the safest cars available at the time.

The wonderful 220S you see here has fortunately has never encountered any such misfortune. The car was first registered in the Netherlands on the 3rd August 1957, making it a rare Dutch supplied example. The car is in a fully restored and very fine condition.

On first impression the 220S presents well. The paintwork is in an optimal state, the classic ivory-white suits the Ponton marvellously and is perfectly intact. The door seals, panel edges and other hidden areas are all in a fine state of maintenance. The alignment is neat and the doors shut as they should on a Mercedes-Benz: like a safe.

The interior is a very stylish affair with a W180, with a full wooden dashboard and top of the door panelling. We are not alluding to having veneer or a thin layer, no we mean a proper wooden finish. It has a fantastic appeal and condition. Set in the wood are the horizontal clocks and many controls that simply shine out quality. Quality is the right word when also describing the wonderful condition of the upholstery with the seats, door and floor covering, all made of fine durable materials. The combination of the tastefully new upholstery and original parts such as the steering wheel and controls lend the car a very attractive charm.

The engine bay looks very neat and tidy. A nice clean space and engine block. That is just the appearance, mechanically this car have been fastidiously maintained. Over the last years the 220S was given either a major or very major service every summer at an official dealership. In the years preceding that the Ponton was extremely well maintained by specialist firms according to the not insubstantial invoices. Those invoices date back to the time when guilders were used, giving us a good overview of the car’s history. The rest of technology is also near perfect. Suspension, brakes, steering, gearbox as well as the electrical circuit and everything attached to it is as it should be: this ‘Benz’ is exactly in the correct shape.

Driving this 220S is one great big pleasure. And then, considering the current temperature, we have not even driven around with the original sunroof open. This Mercedes-Benz was ahead of its time, when it came to comfort and handling. That is still very noticeable when you drive the car today, with an ease of handling and the feeling of sturdiness surrounding you.
