In 1958, presented the new W128, a four-door sedan with a six-cylinder engine and a slightly more spacious body that bore the type designation 220SE. Where the 220 (W180) has a longer engine compartment and passenger compartment, the W128 220SE also adds even more length for the driver and front passenger. A luxury sedan that is nicknamed Ponton, although that name has never been used by Mercedes-Benz itself.

M127 (six-cylinder) were among the first models to have a patented crumple zone, where the occupant compartment was very rigid and the engine compartment had the function of ‘absorbing’ the energy in the event of an accident. This made the Ponton one of the safest cars for sale at that time.

Fortunately, the beautiful 220SE you see here has never experienced such unfortunate moments. The car was first registered in 1959 and came to the Netherlands 11 years ago, where the car had 1 owner.

The first impression of the 220SE is immediately very good: The car has been subjected to an intensive restoration in the Netherlands, and the necessary parts have been replaced and renewed.
the paint is in perfect condition. The classic ivory white color suits the Ponton beautifully and is free of defects. Door rebates, body edges and ‘hidden’ places are also in beautiful condition. The fits are all neat and the doors close as they should on a Mercedes-Benz: like a safe.

The interior is very stylish on a W128, with the entire dashboard and the top of the door trim made of wood. And we don’t mean veneer or a thin layer of finish, no: real wood and then just completely. Its appearance is fantastic and its condition is no less. The wood houses the horizontally arranged clock shop and countless buttons, whatever you look at: the first thing that will come to mind is ‘quality’.
The same quality continues when it comes to the upholstery because both the seats and door panels are completely, very expertly covered with beautiful leather upholstery, as it should be in a luxurious 220SE.
The combination of the new leather upholstery and beautifully restored wooden panels and controls give the car a very attractive appearance.

Under the hood, the Mercedes looks beautiful. A nice clean space and ditto engine block. And we are only talking about the external condition because technically the car has been very well maintained. The last, Dutch owner, has always taken very good care of it. The engine has been overhauled once in the past, but was not necessary upon arrival in the Netherlands, the owner recently measured the compression and it was exactly as it should be.
In short, a very interesting and especially rare Mercedes-Benz 220SE, after all, there were less than 2,000 of the Sedan built, 1,974 of them were built to be precise, and that really makes this car a rarity.
