The Ponton was the first Mercedes-Benz to built according to the “Unibody” principe. That means the complete bodywork is constructed as one whole, attaching the drive train using subframes. This is stark contrast to many cars of that era that utilised separate bodywork and frames. This example hails from the 9th May 1960 and is one of just 200 cars with an original factory fitted Webasto sunroof. The car’s complete title is a Mercedes-Benz W128 220 SE Ponton Coupé, with “E” denoting “Einspritzer”, which is German for fuel-injection.
This example is still quite original. When it came over to the Netherlands in 1979 the odometer stood at only 70,363 km. The car was then literally stored in a private collection where it stayed until 2020. In 2020 the car was fully mechanically made ready for the road whilst retaining its
originality. Since then it has only done a few hundred kilometres bringing the current mileage to just 70,584 km.
The bodywork is still fully original with wonderful correctly aligned panelwork. The stainless steel front and rear bumpers have been replaced at some stage and the brightwork is in great condition. The car has been given a fresh new finish in the original black colour and looks prefect. The car stands on its original rims with gorgeous original hubcaps with black centres.
Inside is utterly like travelling back in time. It has red carpets and red leather. The supple red leather has developed a fantastic patina whilst the original carpets are still in a very good state. Looking at the condition of the wooden dashboard it is clear this car has always benefitted from being garaged. There is simply no way it would have stayed so nice if it had been subjected to a hard life. Quite unique! All instruments and controls are fully original and work as they ought too. The original Becker radio has been completely repaired and now works perfectly! The boot space is upholstered and has handy storage units that were an extra at the time.
This 220SE is propelled by a matching numbers M127 straight-six, The 2.2 litre produces 115 Ps transferred by a manual steering column mounted 4-speed gearbox. The engine runs as smooth as spun silk and the transmission action is precise. The suspension is made for comfort and the brakes are responsive. The car also has independent suspension.
The car comes with a complete car wallet, Datenkarte and a compilation of its history form 1979 until now. In other words this is a unique Mercedes-Benz 220SE Coupé in unmatched condition.
