The SL R107 is possibly one of the most versatile classics around. Sporty but comfortable, sturdy but characterful, a sensible choice that stirs the soul. It was the ultimate all-rounder that was obviously going to do well in the States. And so in 1985, Mr. Johnson wanted a Mercedes-Benz SL. There was a slight hitch though; The Americans only supplied the V8s and he wanted a V6. It was a practical sentiment driven by an almost equal performance at a lower weight benefitting handling and fuel consumption. With his mindset, he went searching for a European 280SL. It did not take long before he found a nearly new 6-cylinder in Signal Red, with a Becker Monza cassette player, left and right divided climate control and a colour-coded hardtop in Germany.

An extra advantage for our American buyer was that the German car has smaller bumpers and clear glass headlights. After having kept the car for the next 15 years it went to its second and last American owner who cherished the SL for the next 20 years before it arrived here in Holland. The two owners only used the car for pleasure so the car has only clocked up 18,410 miles, all driven in a fantastic American climate.

The Signal Red finish is in concourse condition and is completing its first coat. From whichever angle you view this R107 originality beams right out at you. Everywhere you look the alignment is spot-on, the edges of the individual parts and deep lustre finish are simply perfect. Underneath the boot lid and the edge above the taillights has the correct black detailed finish. The interior has that new car smell and feels and looks amazingly new. Not a scratch defaces the dashboard, not a crease in the upholstery, it takes you back to step inside the showroom in 1984 and takes place behind the steering wheel of an exclusive roadster. ‘Einfach fabelhaft’ as the dealerships sales person would have said in German.

Mechanically this Sport Leicht, abbreviated to SL, is excellent. The supple working automatic and brakes give a sense of security that allows you to fully enjoy the use of the 185 hp the 2,746cc six-cylinder offers. The paperwork supports our notion. Maintenance was done perfectly and to schedule, despite the two-seater’s low mileage.

From the front to the rear bumper and from the original hardtop to the sill this 280SL is simply as authentic and pristine as it gets.

If you are ready, this 280SL is too and is bound to give you as much pleasure as its previous two owners.
