This beautiful W113 280SL Pagoda was delivered to the first German owner in 1970. She was a young lady of excellent taste and put together this fine specimen. In the late 1970s she took the car to Malaysia where she moved to marry the governor of Penang. The car was added to the governmental fleet and was in regular use until 1985 when the car was sold to the second owner a Dane named Hans who was seconded to Malaysia at the time. In 1989 he went back to Denmark and took the Pagoda with him. He owned the car until 1999. When he sold the car, the Pagoda had lost quite a bit of its former luster and the car was due for a restoration. The restoration was carried out by the penultimate owner. He was a gifted mechanic and restorer and wanted to bring the car back to top condition, a mission in which he more than succeeded. The comprehensive restoration and overhaul took several years and was not completed until 2006. He owned the car until 2016 and sold the car simply because he didn’t have enough time to drive it. The car was then sold to the last owner from whom we bought the car. The last owner only used the car in good weather and even states that this 280SL has never driven through the rain after the restoration. That claim is completely consistent with the condition of the car.

The restoration is documented by means of a photo series that is present with the car. The bodywork was reduced to bare metal and repaired where necessary. All chrome work has been re-chromed. The hood frame was repainted, the hood was renewed, the wheel covers were re-chromed and repainted and the rims were also repainted. everything shows that the work has been done with a great sense of originality. The car therefore looks beautiful. The sheet metal is nice and thin, the fits are correct and the paint was also very well sprayed at the time and is still in very nice condition. The convertible top has some very light traces of use, but is easy to operate and fits nicely everywhere. The rims and hubcaps are fitted with good Michelin tires in the correct sizes.

The interior was completely reupholstered with beautiful red leather and new carpets. The dashboard was repainted and upholstered. Everything has been thought of, the Becker Europa radio functions as it should, the map reading lamp in the glove compartment works well and the inside of the glove compartment has also been reupholstered, it is all leading for the way in which the restoration was carried out. The leather is of high quality, completely in line with the original used members and wonderfully supple.

During the restoration, the technology was completely overhauled. The transmission has been overhauled by a specialist and the engine has been disassembled down to the last screw. The 2.8 liter in-line six produces 170 hp and is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. During construction, all pipes, cables and rubbers were also renewed. The engine runs fantastic and is even more powerful than its 170 hp would suggest. The automatic transmission shifts wonderfully smoothly and fits perfectly with the relaxed character of the Pagode.

The Pagoda comes with a copy of the original manual, photo series of the restoration and revision and some general history about this specific example. In short, a beautiful Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda in a beautiful color scheme and in top optical and technical condition.
