You can hardly imagine that matters were not going well for in the 90’s. The long-running 928 and the 944 derivative 968 were not selling to the extent that encouraged Zuffenhausen to treat their workers to a nice Friday afternoon office drinks party. Of course the 911 versions of the 964 and the later 993 were still profitable, however the area of air-cooled 911’s was coming to a close. Things had to change if they were to survive.

That is when in 1993 the Porsche Boxster Concept arrived at the North America International Auto Show. A very smooth and modern styled roadster with hints of the classic 1953 Porsche 550 Spyder. A few years later the slightly modified model went into production, even before the first water-cooled 911, the 996, had been unveiled. The Boxster is an immediate huge success, moreover the Boxster, though not seen by all Porsche enthusiasts as a proper Porsche, plays a significant part as the brand’s saviour.

The Porsche Boxster is a gigantic success, available with the choice of various engines such as the 2.5 and 2.7 boxers. A 3.2 Boxster S is also part of the lineup. According to the sportscar connoisseurs the one to have. A lovely fat six-cylinder, great sounding, torque rich with spine tingling acceleration. We have the superlative version for you: The 2004 Boxster S 50 Jahre 550 Spyder Special Edition as Porsche named it, very apt even though it is quite a mouthful. A different chip now takes the output to 266 hp making the 0 to 100 km/hr dash in 5.7 seconds and topping out at 266 km/hr. This is indeed Porsche worthy performance!

The added value is not so much the engine but in the execution of its construction. The reason Porsche alludes to the 550 Spyder is the fact that in 2004 Porsche marked the 50th anniversary of the entrance of the of the 550 Spyder onto the sporting arena, winning almost everything on its way, with this Special edition. Those victories included the Le Carrera Panamericana, the reason you still see the Carrera name used on some Porsches.
You can identify this, deep breath, Boxster S 50 Jahre 550 Spyder Special Edition by its exhaust, 10mm less ground clearance and 5mm extra track width. The ‘Carrera GT’ silver-grey paintwork contrasts beautifully with the chocolate brown leather with much of the interior trim carrying the silver-grey accents on inside. Once behind the wheel you can properly appreciate the amount of work Porsche put into this special interior. The choice of colours and materials is simply wonderful.

Our Porsche is, as are the rest of its sibs, a 2004 car with just 89,389 km on the clock. Number 147/1953 is in formidable, cherished shape. We do not loosely use the term pristine, but it certainly come to mind when describing this Boxster. When it was not in use, it was warmly nestled in a heated garage. Every bit of documentation is included with this Belgium supplied Boxster, embracing invoices and the original fully stamped official Porsche dealership service book.

We need not elaborate on the obvious pleasure driving the jubilee edition brings. The very powerful engine, the ultra-smooth tiptronic gearbox and fabulous suspension; it does not get much better than when you have an exclusive, limited edition and especially fine handling car available to choose from. Not often seen in this kind of condition! A unique opportunity in short.
