Not everybody knows this but the T1 had a Dutch hand in its design. The first sketches were put to paper by the Dutchman Ben Pon, VW importer in the Netherlands. In 1950 production starts and as with the Beetle a new icon was born. With lots of simple Beetle technology and a unique character the ‘Bus’ appeals to almost anybody.
The grey-white T1 you see here is from 1958. This capacious wonder started life in America before entering the Netherlands in 2004, where she has stayed in the same hands ever since. This Bus is one with rare surround pop-up windows which adds to the car’s charm. Just under ten years ago she was fully restored. The photos show she was taken back to bare metal.

The state of its unitary body is very good. We have very neat paintwork in one of the most popular finishes of mouse grey and white two-tone. The respray has clearly been done professionally. The T1 itself has a wonderful presence, add a new stainless steel roof-rack with wooden slats to that and we are talking iconic. The fine state of the bodywork is down to the fact the one and only Dutch owner also garaged his car and only used it for pleasure trips.
Inside the grey-white theme is continued. The internal paintwork was resprayed in white after having being taken back to bare metal. It has complimenting grey upholstery. The three rows of seats and more than ample loading space make this Volkswagen ultimately suitable for fun road trips with friends and family.
Originally the 1958 T1 had a 4-cylinder 30 hp engine, it now has a 1973 50 hp 1,584 cc power-plant, which adds to your driving pleasure, especially when fully loaded. The engine runs smoothly without any untoward noises. The same is true about the 4-speed gearbox. A nice touch is the 12 V electrical system that has been installed, replacing the old 6V one together with fully rewired electrical looms. Underneath all is healthy and sound and as neatly presented as the rest of the car.
The car come with the essential documentation and lots of photos of the restoration.
You may well be in the market for a very good looking and perfectly working Volkswagen T1. You probably also do not mind the fact that all the modifications are hidden and only done to improve you ride. This then is undoubtably the ideal Bus for you!
