Which car was first to be fitted with seatbelts? The Volvo Amazon. The first car with three-point safety belt? You guessed it: Again the Volvo Amazon. No wonder the 1956 introduced Swedish saloon is still considered a safe car. Add pleasant handling and very reliable technology and it is clear why for many years owners of these vehicles feel it is one of the most popular classics when used for what it is intended for, and that is to drive!
This 121 two-door saloon is a good example. It was handed to its first owner in 1970, the last year of production before it was succeeded by the 140 series. That first owner choose a dark-green finish (code 94) and light-brown interior trim (code 433-635). Late 1996 the car ended up with its last and only Dutch owner before we were able to acquire it. In over 25 years this very happy owner covered many miles in his Amazon whilst keeping this restored car in meticulous shape. Everything has been noted down and kept in a file so you can track what and when maintenance was carried out. For example when a new M41 overdrive gearbox was fitted, the engine was overhauled, when a certain indicator relay was changed and when new brakes were fitted. You name it and it has all been recorded.
It just goes to show how happy the owner was with his car and explains the excellent condition of its bodywork. Not very prone to rust, this Amazon none the less had lots of preventative attention. As such we can easily describe the car as being in peak condition. The bodywork is neat without any nasty surprises. Doors close easy, the paintwork is lovely and alignment is all very neat. Now there are polishers and drivers when it comes to owning a classic, our owner happily straddled both groups. Just look at the exceedingly tidy engine bay. The 1,986 cc B20 block looks hardy used, although that is certainly not the case. Especially these days when fuel economy is important, the LPG installation is a bonus. Recently the valves have been adjusted and the oil replaced as well as perfecting the brake system.
So whilst we need not to expand any further in respect of the car’s mechanical prowess, we would like to highlight the interior with its fine green and light-brown colour scheme. Again the condition is particularly tidy. The upholstery is neat and the seats are comfortable. Seated you have good view of the tidy dashboard with its characteristic flat speedometer and many knobs. We can readily appreciate how the previous owner was able to cover so many miles.
This Volvo Amazon needs to be driven, has always done just that and has a preference to get a new owner who would enjoy it just as much. Another 25 years of single ownership? Yes if it is down to our Volvo, who is bound to effortlessly keep up with demand!
