In 1958 the Volvo PV544 is presented, as successor to the PV444. Actually, the already available Amazon is the successor, but for many people that completely new model is a bit pricey. As a kind of interim solution, Volvo comes with the PV544, an upgraded variant of the PV444, which had been in production for 14 years.
The PV544 you see here is one from the last year, 1965 to be exact. A car that has been restored in the past and is actually very neat. The body feels, as is usually the case with Volvo, extremely solid. Doors fit nicely in the lock catches and the sheet metal has neat fits everywhere. The creamy white paintwork can also be called very neat, a single minimal damage must be sought carefully. Chrome work, aluminum cases and rubbers are also in a healthy condition.
The interior has a lot of charm. The red partly skai, partly fabric upholstery is very neat and has of course been renewed in the past. The like new dark carpet with red seat upholstery and many parts in paint color give the car a very nice, warm appearance. The gauges all function properly and buttons and levers also do what is asked of them. The PV544 has a very spacious interior where you can easily travel with your whole family.
You will also arrive at your final destination fully loaded with passengers and luggage, because the 1.780 has enough torque and the power does not disappoint. Don’t expect sports car performance of course, but the PV544 with B18 engine is an exceptionally comfortable companion. This PV544 is also equipped with the optional M40 four-speed gearbox that makes driving long distances a bit more comfortable.
On the road with the PV544, it is striking how well such a Swedish hatchback, also known as Katback, actually drives. Fine steering characteristics and an engine that provides excellent acceleration and has enough power to keep up with today’s traffic. Very enjoyable.
The bottom of the car is also excellent, and so are sills and screen edges. All in all, the Volvo ‘Katback’ is a car that lends itself perfectly to frequent use and that is also practical and reliable.
This copy is not only neatly cared for, but also executed in a tasteful color scheme and, moreover, the variant with a more powerful B18 engine.
