wanted to win races, so it built a road-going motorcycle that, in reality, existed primarily because it was needed on the racetrack. That is always a promising place to start.

The 1993 Ducati 888 SP5 was the final homologation special in the celebrated 851 and 888 series. This was not a standard production model with a few different decals, but a genuinely special machine developed directly from Ducati’s ambitions in the World Superbike Championship. Only 500 examples were built. This is number 141.

The story began with the Ducati 851. That motorcycle introduced liquid cooling, electronic fuel injection, and four valves per cylinder to Ducati’s familiar V-twin.

The engine capacity was later increased to 888 cc, creating the motorcycle that helped Ducati secure two world championships. Doug Polen won the World Superbike Championship in both 1991 and 1992 on a Ducati 888. In doing so, the angular red machine became not only an alluring Italian sportbike, but also one of the defining Superbikes of its generation.

And then came the SP5. The letters SP stood for Sport Production. These were the special road models Ducati used to homologate racing technology. In 1993, the SP5 became the final chapter in that series—the last before the 916 changed everything. And that is precisely what makes it so compelling today. The 888 cc V-twin is paired with a six-speed transmission and delivers its performance in a way that feels entirely distinctive.

This example was cherished for many years by its owner, a true connoisseur with an impressive collection. Its condition is therefore of collector quality. Not merely beautiful enough to display beneath perfect lighting, but exactly the kind of motorcycle that makes you instinctively slow your pace as you walk around it. Because with an SP5, the details matter. The components specific to this model, its authentic appearance, and the fact that so many examples were once used hard, modified, or taken to the racetrack all play a part. This one was carefully preserved.

A 1993 Ducati 888 SP5, number 141 of only 500 built, and the final homologation special in the iconic 851/888 series. The 916 may have become more famous, but without this motorcycle, that story would never have begun in quite the same way. Interested? Contact Gallery Aaldering today.
