E30 M3, for many car enthusiasts that combination of letters and numbers has a magical effect. The E30 M3 is one of the most legendary icons when it comes to sports sedans. At a time when Audi, Mercedes-Benz and almost all other brands were delivering sporty versions of their family sedans, BMW came up with the M3 and in retrospect, we can actually say that BMW won that competition.

The M3 debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1985, and no one could have expected the car to become what it is today, including BMW itself. The BMW M3 may look like a regular 3-series from a distance, but it could hardly be more different. In fact, the M3 only shared the hood with its tamer relatives, screens, the tailgate, bumpers and more: everything was adapted for the special sports sedan. The observant viewer will see that even the rear window is placed more vertically, for better aerodynamic efficiency. Further adjustments included a lowered and stiffer suspension, wider wheels, five-hole hubs, ventilated front brake discs, ABS and a limited-slip differential as standard. The gearbox is one from Getrag with five ‘close-ratio’ gears.

This ‘first generation’ M3, built in 1989, was sold new in Sweden at ‘B. Larsson Bilservice’. The car remained in maintenance there until 2006, after which the car was maintained by another specialist, who fortunately continued to keep the original booklets. As a result, the complete board folder with all original booklets is still present with the car and is in very nice condition.

The E30 M3 you see here is in superb condition. Diamant Schwarz (colour code 181) is perhaps already the most popular colour, in combination with the subtle red trim in the bumpers it makes the car very desirable. The paint of the car is in excellent condition and nothing shows that the car has driven approximately 127,000 kilometers. The paintwork is perfect, the sheet metal underneath is very tight and the fits of all hinged parts are exceptionally tight. An M3 as you rarely see: very original with all the correct details and clearly a car without a dark past.

If the bodywork doesn’t tell you enough about the incredible condition of the car, the interior certainly does. Beautiful, original fabric upholstery with the characteristic checked pattern. The rest of the interior is also really fantastic with the original M steering wheel and the original lever. Two parts that were usually replaced by aftermarket ones sometime in the 1990s or 2000s, but not with this completely original car.

And then the engine, the much-loved 2,302 cc four-cylinder with 24 valves. An engine that in terms of basic architecture had its origins in the M1 and M635. In this four-wheeled boy’s dream, the engine delivers 200 hp. The E30 M3 is known as one of the best-handling cars in its class and in our opinion that is completely justified. Very appealing power from a relatively light engine block so that the nose is not too heavy, rear-wheel drive with a limited-slip differential and a great-shifting five-speed gearbox. The BMW M3 is remarkably comfortable but is mainly characterized by communication. You feel everything that happens beneath you. The steering is precise and communicative, the rear axle transmits incredibly well at speed what is happening.

Well, if you are just as crazy about the E30 M3, we probably don’t have to explain to you how this legendary BMW drives. Let us especially emphasize how consistently and well this car has been maintained and how it has always been treated with care. It is almost inevitable that this M3 will envelop you as completely as it did us. ‘Freude Am Fahren’ has been BMW’s slogan since 1965 and no car is as effective as in this icon from 1989.
