Some motorcycles tell their story primarily through their engineering. Others through their condition. And every now and then, you come across a machine whose history is every bit as enjoyable as the ride itself. This 1953 R67/2 clearly belongs in that last category.

This BMW was originally delivered to the police force in Zutphen. And that immediately gives a motorcycle like this a very different character. The image is easy to picture: a Dutch police officer on a substantial BMW boxer, leather jacket on, cap firmly in place, and perhaps a Porsche 356 up ahead that was just a little too enthusiastic with the throttle. Or an early Corvette C1 whose driver assumed there was not much to worry about on Dutch roads. We are not saying that is exactly what happened. But with this BMW in the story, it suddenly becomes a lot more entertaining.

It was even joked at the time that sick leave among police officers was remarkably low whenever they were allowed to ride the BMW. Understandable. If your working day begins with an R67/2, staying home suddenly has very little appeal.

The R67/2 appeared in the early 1950s as a further development of the R67 and represents exactly the kind of BMW motorcycle with which the brand firmly re-established its reputation after the war. Solid, technically well thought out, and built to a standard that feels almost perfect. BMW was not building machines in this period to be light or frivolous above all else. They were built to work. Day after day. Mile after mile.

At the heart of the motorcycle is the familiar 594 cc two-cylinder boxer engine. Compared with the earlier R67, the compression ratio was increased, raising output to approximately 28 horsepower. That may sound modest by modern standards, but anyone who rides a good R67/2 immediately understands that the numbers do not tell the whole story. The engine runs smoothly, delivers its power with ease, and has exactly that characteristic boxer feel for which classic BMWs are so highly regarded.

The engineering is typical BMW of the period. A tubular frame with plunger rear suspension, a telescopic front fork, and shaft drive. The engine, gearbox, and final-drive housing are all made from aluminum. Everything feels logical, solid, and developed for serious use. No unnecessary embellishment. Just engineering designed to keep working.

The R67/2 was also known as an exceptionally high-quality touring motorcycle. Until the arrival of the sportier R68, it ranked among the fastest German touring motorcycles of its time. At the same time, it remained suitable for sidecar use, something for which BMW’s 600 cc boxers had already earned an excellent reputation before the war. The construction was strong, the engine offered ample pulling power, and the shaft drive made it particularly well suited to intensive use.

This example has been completely restored and rebuilt. Not halfway, not just cosmetically, but thoroughly. The result is an R67/2 that presents in genuinely exceptional condition. The paintwork, chrome, mechanical components, and overall finish are all of a particularly high standard. In short, exactly how you hope a restored BMW from this period will look.

And then there is another detail we consider at least as important: this motorcycle comes with its original Dutch linen registration document. With a machine that has such an unusual Dutch history, that adds a great deal. This is not simply a story added to the motorcycle later on; the tangible evidence of its past is still there.

That makes this BMW more than just a beautifully restored classic motorcycle. It has identity. Dutch history. A police background. And it represents a period when BMW motorcycles were known for their solid, dependable quality.
A 1953 BMW R67/2, completely restored and rebuilt, in truly exceptional condition and supplied with its original Dutch linen registration document. Once destined for the Zutphen police force, and today ideally suited to someone who understands just how much charm there is in a perfectly rebuilt classic BMW boxer.

And if you are wondering whether you can still chase a Porsche 356 with it? Of course you can. Whether you overtake it, we will gladly leave up to you.
