What a rarity, this very original Dutch supplied Rocket Gold Star, RGS for short. In was only in production for two short years between 1962 and 1963. These days you see more replicas than originals. This one, we are pleased to say, is one of the 1,584 originals built.

The idea for the Rocket Gold Star sprouted from the brain of Eddie Dow, a British motor bike icon and BSA dealer. Dow not only sold bikes, he had also been a successful bike racer on the legendary ‘Singles’ as well as producing race engine components himself.

It seemed quite a good plan to combine the suppleness, flexibility and easy start of a two-cylinder with the prowess of the well selling Gold Star. The frame was spacious enough to accommodate the two-stroke. The 190 mm racing brake of the Gold Star and removable wheel made it immediately fit for racing.
The Rocket Gold Star came with three gear ratio options, the RRT2 close ratio box, the SCT for motor-cross and the STD for the road. The Gold Star’s fuel tank with its handy filling caps and foot support mounted further back came from sports bike as well.

In reality Dow had managed to create a BSA that rode and stopped like a Gold Star, had the top-speed of a Goldie, with faster acceleration and ease of use. You could say a ‘Golden’ combination. BSA were well aware of the potential of what Dow had done and had been on the lookout for a new two-cylinder. The RGS was perfect as there was little need for new parts and everything they needed was readily available on their shelves. The company used a two-in-one exhaust. This had the effect of quietening the noise and increasing the power band so that a free-flowing Burgess absorption silencer could be used. With its racing exhaust the RGS hit the magic 50 hp mark. In 1963 the ‘Mechanics’ magazine tested a RGS and reached a top-speed of 120 mph (200 km/hr), the fastest bike they had ever tested. The RGS was quite the challenge.

The bike we have on offer has been fully restored by a specialist in this field of motor bikes. Using Hepolite pistons, a SRM oil pump and Girling shocks it is clear only the very best materials were used during the restoration.

In addition a special fact is this Rocket Gold Star is one of about ten examples originally supplied in the Netherlands. Hart Nibbrig & Greeve of Sassenheim supplied this BSA by on the 12th March 1963.

This BSA having recently been restored and with spring on the horizon, it really is just a question of popping the helmet on and of you go!
