The Ferrari 400i Automatic was the first car Ferrari supplied with automatic transmission. Whilst you would be forgiven to think this option was fully intended for the American market you would be wrong. Not one 400i Automatic was officially sold to the States. There were however quite a few that manage to enterAmerica as a grey import. The main reason Enzo decided against selling the 400i Automatic in America was the impending threat of the introduction of the 55 mph speed limit there. A V8 Ferrari would be more than ample to get along in traffic and he was concerned customers would simply ignore the more powerful V12. In hindsight it turned out not to be such a big deal.
This example initially came from the Brasschaat Ferrari dealership in Belgium. Since it first hit the road on the 21st May 1984 it has remained in the hands of the same family. Dad bought the car when new and later his son took it over making him the second and last owner. Looking at this Ferrari 400i there is not a shadow of a doubt that these two were dedicated enthusiasts. The car has retained most of its original finish and looks stunning. As one would expect there are few signs of use detectable on the paintwork, as is befitting a car of this age and mileage. This Ferrari has only clocked up 77,260 actual kilometres. The car’s overall condition fully supports the claim of this lovely low mileage. The fine original panelwork aligns nicely. The chrome brightwork and original Ferrari rims are in a very good state. This car is just an utter joy to behold.
The car’s dazzle continues inside unabated with the first owner going for a red leather interior as opposed to the usual choice of black or tan. It really looks the part and turns this silver car into a true eye-catcher. Every control and instrument is in very good order as well as all functioning properly. This car has not wanted for anything over the last 40 years, which is all down to the owner’s dedication, low mileage and fantastic maintenance. The great looking leather is delightfully supple. The completely original carpets are also in a very fine state. Other than a replacement radio the rest of this Ferrari’s interior is exactly as it was the day it left the factory. Another remarkable feature is the incredible amount of room you have as a driver. Whereas Italian cars could be a little bit too snug in the past, Ferrari really made great strides since the introduction of the 365 GT of improving the drivers space. This is a proper drivers car with a great set up of the seat combined with good dashboard ergonomics.
The engine is still the very same one it had when it said ciao at the Maranello gates before starting its Belgium adventure. The V12 has a 4.8 litre capacity and Bosch K-jetronic injection. The engine transfers its power through a 3-speed automatic which sits well with the relaxed motoring characteristics of this tourer. There is fully independent suspension with automatic rear levelling, lending this 400i fine driving features. The car has comfortable suspension without it being to vague, it achieves just the right balance between sportiness and comfort. You can easily drive around all day in this Ferrari 400i whilst enjoying the stunning V12 and majestic soundtrack.
The car comes with an official Ferrari workshop manual, a complete car wallet containing the service book. In short this is a stunning Ferrari 400i Automatic with its brilliant finish, it great condition and not to forget its low mileage. You would really need to have the powers of Sherlock Holmes to find a more stylish Italian GT. And even then…
