If you mix Pinin Farina, Dante Giacosa, Ernesto Maserati, OSCA and together and you get the following result. It becomes clear that the car we have here is much more than you would expect from its badge.
The Fiat 1600S ‘OSCA’ is the result of cooperation between three great names in car history. Towards the end of the 50’s the Maserati brothers with their OSCA (Officine Spezializzata Costruzioni Automobili) company were looking to transfer their racing expertise into production cars. Racing alone did not generate enough income. In 1957 Ernesto Maserati started to speak to Dante Giacosa, Fiat’s head of development. He put forward an idea to build a lightweight 4-cylinder engine, an idea that appealed to Giacosa. Fiat at that time, stuck with slow 1100 and 1200cc engines, decided to go ahead with OSCA’s engines. Pinin Farina were allowed to design the bodywork and build too. Initially they used a 1500cc OSCA power plant with a 75 hp output, by October ‘62 upgraded to a 1600cc developing for early ‘60’s an admirable 90 hp. The 1600S is pricey and the production numbers remain low with overall about 814 1600s OSCA’s built.

Our 1600S dates back to the 5th October 1963 according to the official details of the Centro Archivo Storico FCA. The car found its way first to an Italian who thankfully kept the original ‘carte di circolazione’ up to date and secure as well as the original spare parts book.
This 1600S has been completely restored, as demonstrated in the accompanying photos. It is therefore no surprise the car you see in front of you is in extremely fine condition. The paintwork is beautiful, the brightwork striking. These looks would not be out of kilter at a car show also featuring a Ferrari 250 GTE and a Lancia Flavia coupé, both not wholly coincidently derived form the same design stable.

If you feel the outside looks great, the interior looks, if possible, even more striking, even more Italian. Gorgeous red Italian leather upholstery, a truly stunning Nardi steering wheel and two huge attractive gauges separated by a charming little clock. Considering the sporadic use of this coupé we are pretty sure all instruments, switching gear and interior trim are original. The interior exudes the same atmosphere as Italian beauties costing a multitude and still reach today.
Mechanically the 1600s OSCA is as beautiful to see as it is engaging to drive. The engine clearly shows its racing pedigree. It feels best at home in the higher rev range where it dispenses its fast speed. The experience and sound coming from that 1,568 cc Twin-Cam is so very addictive.

If, unlikely, you are still not quite sure about this coupés enormous appeal we refer the doubter to peruse the big articles in the English “Auto Italia” or German “Alles Auto” magazines.
