Looking at the overall sales figures of the 403 the proportion of 403 convertibles is minute. Between 1955 and 1965 Peugeot sold 1.2 million 403’s. Only 2,043 were of the 403 convertible. The 403 convertible was built by Pininfarina in Italy in contrast to most Peugeots at the time. Pininfarina not only designed the 403 convertible it was also allowed to build them. The 403 convertible was also the start of the very long relationship between the French car manufacturer and the Italian design house that would last up to the drop-dead gorgeous Peugeot 406 coupé. The considerably higher ticket price was directly responsible for the relatively low number of sales for the convertible. You could almost buy two normal 403’s for the price of one convertible. In the ’70s the 403 convertible’s fame got a boost from featuring in the hit detective series Colombo. The popularity diminished in subsequent years meaning not many 403 convertibles have survived. Experts believe that fewer than 200 have survived in the worst-case scenario! Our 1964 example has been fully restored and is in good shape. The car lived in warmer climes and therefore has never needed any chassis welding. The pictures of the car’s underside do confirm this.

The bodywork is in wonderful condition. The panelwork is nicely thin and correctly aligned. It has a lovely Burgundy red finish, has a practically new perfectly fitting black hood. The interior

was reupholstered with fine grey carpets and grey leather trim. The leather is showing very slight signs of use that only lend a lovely lived-in character to the car. The simple mechanics are very robust. The 1.5-litre engine produces 68 Ps and in true French tradition is attached to a steering column-mounted manual 4-speed transmission. The car has wonderfully comfortable road holding and is a joy to travel in. The really supple engine suits the car’s relaxed character perfectly. The gear change is precise and the rest of the controls and gauges all work as they should.

This, we are pleased to say, is a wonderfully well-restored very rare Peugeot 403 convertible!
