has had the TR3 in production for a long time. Very long. The successor was therefore long overdue. Oh yes, Triumph certainly knew that they would soon have to come up with a successor, but the sympathetic English brand was held back by the high costs of development and starting production. The brand also had to renew radically because the TR3 was strongly based on the TR2, which originated in the 20 TS, or TR1 as it was later baptized.

In the end, the project is given the green flag and Giovanni Michelotti is allowed to take up his pen and paper to draw a beautiful body. The demands? Recognizably Triumph and the old chassis had to be used unchanged as a basis.
What was new was a larger engine capacity, there was a fully synchronized gearbox on board and the TR4 actually had access to wind-up windows.

So in terms of chassis, the TR4 was a bit of a case of ‘old wine in new bottles’ and that changed in 1965 with the arrival of the TR4A. Triumph itself also realized that something needed to be changed and so the TR4A got independent rear suspension, which was partly taken from the parts shelves of the 2000 Saloon. From now on the abbreviation IRS could be found on the rear, meaning no more than Independant Rear Suspension. The sober metal dashboard also received an update: from now on it was covered with wood veneer.

The TR4A you see here is one with a very nice, original look. Yes, the car has already been given a new coat of paint and that was done very neatly. But we are not dealing with an over-restored car here. The sheet metal parts are all very neat and have no significant damage. The paintwork has, if you look carefully, a small thing here and there, but it is almost negligible. The chrome is in a very neat condition and that also applies to the beautiful steel wire wheels.
The interior is just as neat, with the wooden inlays on the dashboard typical of the TR4A. All things in the interior work. The gauges are modern versions with digital mileage.
The purist will probably also let his eyes go directly over the seats. Not original but fits nicely. They originate from a Mazda MX5 and are of course very comfortable and with a lot of lateral support.

Under the hood is a 104 hp 2,136 cc four-cylinder in-line engine. The block is mated to a four-speed manual gearbox and in this case with overdrive for greater comfort on long journeys. The power unit on this particular TR4A performs very well and revs beautifully. The gearbox shifts smoothly and the brakes and steering also perform their duties with pleasure.

The car comes with a full binder of bills and documents that have been collected over the years. It can be concluded from this that the Triumph has always had the maintenance that was necessary, only outsourced to specialist parties.
In short, this Triumph TR4A IRS is the ideal candidate for lovers of classic roadsters who want to enjoy their classic car a lot. A car that drives fantastic, partly due to some subtle adjustments. Prefer original? This was achieved with some very minor interventions.
